The book Prosodic Resources in Discourse Marking, authored by Quintero Ramírez and Radillo Enríquez (2023) and published by the German publisher Peter Lang, primarily aims to demonstrate how prosodic resources—such as rising and falling intonation movements, tonal jumps, and descending stepwise patterns in prosodic paragraphs—contribute to the organization of spoken discourse. These resources can replace or complement traditional discourse markers. The authors conducted a study on how speakers of the Guadalajara variant of Mexican Spanish utilize these resources to structure their discourse. The book is structured into five chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction, highlighting the significance of prosody in discourse marking, outlining the study’s objectives, justifying its relevance, and providing an overview of the subsequent sections. Chapter 2 delves into the theoretical foundations that underpin the study. Chapter 3 provides a detailed description of the corpus and the methodology employed for the analysis. Chapter 4 presents the results obtained from the study. Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes the conclusions, acknowledges the limitations of the study, and discusses its potential contributions.
