Abstract

The introduction to the monograph “Glottophobia and Linguistic Diversity: Challenges and Perspectives in Contemporary Sociolinguistics Across Multiple Contexts” examines glottophobia as a form of discrimination based on the language or linguistic varieties spoken by individuals. The text emphasizes that this phenomenon, conceptualized by Philippe Blanchet, affects speakers of minority, regional, immigrant, or non-standard language varieties, generating linguistic insecurity, stigmatization, forced assimilation, and social inequalities. Drawing on research conducted primarily in Francophone contexts, but also in Hispanic, Catalan, Galician, Basque, and Lusophone settings, the volume highlights the importance of studying linguistic rights and the power relations that shape communicative practices. Originating from a scientific conference held at the University of Zaragoza in 2025, the monograph brings together a range of comparative studies that analyze manifestations of glottophobia across different languages and sociocultural contexts. Its aim is to promote linguistic diversity as a democratic principle, strengthen social cohesion, and encourage educational, research, and social initiatives that contribute to combating linguistic discrimination.
