Abstract

This article examines the relationship between language policy and language ideologies in Mexico, drawing on ethnographic research of three case studies conducted in Tepic, Nayarit. The study explores how national and global ideologies shape linguistic practices, identity, and social stratification, particularly for linguistic minorities such as indigenous people, returning migrants, and hearing-impaired. Grounded in sociolinguistic and ethnographic frameworks, the study highlights how neoliberal and nationalist ideologies influence perceptions of linguistic legitimacy, while everyday family practices challenge and reconfigure these dominant ideologies. Findings suggest that language policy in Mexico remains deeply tied to colonial and monolingual legacies, despite its recognition of linguistic diversity. The study contributes to the broader discussion of linguistic justice, multilingualism, and social inclusion, offering implications for equitable language planning and policy-making in multilingual societies.
