Detectives of the language. Elements to promote metalinguistic reflection through the resolution of forensic linguistic problems

Abstract

One of the objectives of language teaching is to foster the capacity for metalinguistic reflection (i.e. the ability to understand how language and communication work). In this article we make a proposal in this direction based on the simulation of professional situations related to forensic linguistics, in which language is necessary to solve the proposed problems. The first problem consists in finding out whether an e-mail has been written by the signing institution or it is a hoax; the other two problems involve analysing various aspects of speech (in particular, perceptual parameters related to voice, on the one hand, and filled pauses, on the other hand). Teaching activities have been based on problem-based learning and gamification.
