The Evolution of The Spanish Discourse Marker ‘En Cambio’: A Diachronic Analysis

The diachronic analysis of discourse markers helps us understand how they conveyed many of their current functions. This paper explores the path followed by ‘en cambio’ from a prepositional phrase to a discourse marker. Therefore, we demonstrate that the expansion of new functions in the connector ‘en cambio’ can be accounted for in diachronic terms. To achieve this outcome, data was collected from the diachronic corpus CORDE and El Corpus del Español. The exemplars analyzed in this paper come from written texts from Spain. The corpus is divided into nine chronological parts, from the 11th century to the 19th century. To gain insight into the different mechanisms of change implied, we analyzed the data in light of the theory of Grammaticalization (Traugott, 1995) and a multi-level analysis (Pons, 2016). Our results suggest that the process of ‘en cambio’ can be observed in three historical stages while demonstrating that these processes depended on linguistic and pragmatic factors that contributed to the increase of functions of ‘en cambio’. These results offer evidence for understanding the grammaticalization processes that formed new discourse markers, such as ‘en cambio’. Furthermore, the study describes the diachronic process of this discourse marker by considering linguistic and pragmatic variables.
