Abstract

In typological research a strong feature of most ergative languages (although not all) are the so-called excisions. These consist of determined aspects of the grammar of the language that follow an ergative-absolutive syntactic alignment, as opposed to others that follow a nominative-accusative system. This article reexamines the theoretical approaches of Bernard Comrie (1978) and Robert M. W. Dixon (1979, 1994) and subsequently provides an overview of the different constraints on excisions in ergative languages, such as the semantic nature of the verb, the semantic nature of noun phrases, excisions regarding time / mode / aspect and excisions of the main clause as opposed to the subordinate clause.
